Adventure Racing

A type of extreme sports competition blending many or all of the following disciplines into one epic adventure: canoeing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, navigation, portaging, rafting, riding, swimming, trekking, tyrolean traverse. Mixed gender teams compete in races lasting from several hours to several days, with little or no sleep!

Airsoft

Billiards

Billiards is any of several games played with a leather-tipped stick, the cue, and various numbers of balls on an oblong, cloth-covered table with raised, cushioned edges. The three main types are carom billiards, played with three balls on a pocketless table, pocket billiards or pool, using a cue ball and 15 object balls on a table with six pockets and snooker, similar to pool but with 21 object balls.

Bocce

Bocce is the Italian version of lawn bowling. The earliest known form of the sport was a game played in the Italian Alps, early in the Christian Era, in which stones were tossed at a target stone in an attempt to land as close as possible to it. This was a source of amusement for Roman soldiers, who spread it through the empire. Balls were eventually substituted for the stones and they were usually rolled rather than tossed.

Three distinct types of lawn bowling developed through the centuries. In France, the game was known as boules, from the Classical Latin word for ball. A different form of the sport became known in England as "lawn bowls." Bocce, also known as boccia, derived its name from the Vulgar Latin word for ball, bottia.

Just about every professional sports fan has dreamed about having a team full of star players or, when their team's general manager makes another boneheaded move, that they could be the one calling the shots and signing, or releasing, players for the betterment of the team.

Fantasy sports is an outlet for just such a person. By using the stats of real players in real games, team "owners" get to see how their "dream team" stacks up against others. Once relegated to pencil-and-paper and the local newspaper's sports section, Fantasy Sports have moved to the web in a big way.

Fencing

This category contains general information on western Olympic, Classical, and, less frequently, Historical fencing. Each of these versions of fencing involves individual vs. individual competition using some European version of a sword.

• Olympic fencing enthusiasts practice the modern version of the sport, utilizing electronic scoring equipment. The majority of sites in this category are dedicated to Olympic-style fencing.
• Classical enthusiasts do not utilize electronic scoring and practice and compete emphasizing the nobility of the sport.
• Historical fencing typically utilizes multiple weapons at once, and practices the sport prior to the days of directed (refereed) bouts.

Flying Discs

This category lists all non-canine sports involving a disc including double court, disc golf, guts, freestyle, ultimate frisbee, and goaltimate.

Footbag

Footbag is a growing sport, played mostly in Europe and North America, though there are a rapidly growing number of footbag clubs and players around the world. Frequently referred to as "Hacky Sack" (a product manufactured by Wham-O, Inc.), footbag has existed as a competitive sport in several forms since the 1970's. There are a substantial number of footbag tournaments and festivals each year.

Competitive footbag is governed by the International Footbag Committee (IFC), which publishes the official Rules of Footbag Sports.

Football

A wide variety of sports are known by the name 'football' in various parts of the world. Please see the appropriate subcategory for the type of football in which you're interested.

Gaelic

Gaelic sports consist of hurling, camogie, and Gaelic football, as well as handball and shinty.

Goalball

Goalball was invented in 1946 by an Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and a German, Sett Reindle. It is a unique team sport for the visually impaired, played by 2 teams of 3 players. All players are blind-folded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to compete together.

The game is of 14 minutes duration (playing time) divided into 2 x 7 minute halves. The ball used (which is called a goalball), weighs 1.25 kg and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over the opponent's goal line using a bowling action.

Golf

This category is for sites about the game Golf.

The word "golf" is recorded as long ago as 1457, in the statutes of the Scottish Parliament, when the sport was banned because it interfered with archery practice. The word was also spelled "gowf", reflecting the way the Scots pronounced it. Some say the word derives from an Old Dutch or Old German word "kolb, kolven" meaning club, clubs.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a sport men and women take part in. There are two types, rhythmic (women only) and artistic.

Handball

Modern version of a typical Irish sport introduced into the United States by Irish immigrants in the 19th century.

Handball may be played by 2, 3 or 4 players. It is played outdoors (one-wall and three-wall versions) as well as indoors in a four-wall court. Handball players wear form-fitting gloves, usually made of soft leather.

The purpose of the game is to hit the ball against a wall with either hand in such a way that the opponent or opponents cannot return the ball?that is, drive the ball back against a wall, before it has hit the floor twice. The open palm or the clenched fist may be used in hitting the ball. Server is a awarded a point if the ball is missed by the receiver. If during the volley the server misses a return, the opponent, becomes the server. The achievement of 21 points wins a game. Usually the best of three games wins a match.

Handball should not be confused with the Olympic sport called "Team Handball", although it is very common in international circles to call Team Handball just Handball.

Hockey

Whether played on the ice, on a field, on the street or elsewhere, hockey is an exciting team sport involving two teams who attempt to score the most goals against their opponents.

Informal Sports

This category is for sports games that are played informally and do not have organized federations or international events.

Jai Alai

Jai Alai or Pelota Vasca (Basque Ball) is played hurling the ball (pelota) with the cesta directly into the front wall. The other player must catch the ball (with the cesta) on the fly or at the first bounce and throw it in one fluid motion. Only sites devoted to Jai Alai are appropriate for this category.

Kabbadi

Kabaddi is a popular game among the people of Asia, especially in the villages of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Japan. Some people believe it is an Indian game but no one knows the origin of this game. Some historians believe that it is nearly a 4,000 year old game.

Kabbadi involves skills and powers of two teams and combines the characteristics of wrestling and rugby. It was originally meant to develop self defense, in addition to responses to attack, and reflexes of counter attack by individuals, and by groups or teams. It is a rather simple and inexpensive game, and neither requires a massive playing area, nor any expensive equipment. This explains the popularity of the game in rural areas. Kabaddi is played all over Asia with minor variations.

Kabaddi is also known by various names such as Chedugudu or Hu-Tu-Tu in southern parts of India, Hadudu (Men) and Chu - Kit-Kit (women) in eastern India, and Kabaddi in northern India. Jhoo played in Iran, and Cattlefish played in Korea are very similar to Kabaddi.

Korfball

Korfball is a game comparable to netball and basketball, invented in 1901 by an Amsterdam schoolmaster, Nico Broekhuysen (source: Encyclopedia Brittanica). First demonstrated in Holland in 1902.

Korfball is played by two teams of 8 (4 men, 4 women) on a rectangular court roughly the same size as a basketball court.

Action consists almost entirely of passing from hand to hand. Passing and movement forms the basis of the game with attackers using changes of speed and direction, combined with team tactics to try to lose their defenders in order to create a shooting chance.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America, dating back to the 1400s. In 1636, Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary, witnessed Huron Indians playing a game with a ball carried and hurled from a curved stick with a pouch at the top. The Hurons called the game 'bagataway' but, since the stick was similar to a bishop's crosier (la crosse in French), it became known as la crosse and, eventually, lacrosse.

Field lacrosse is played on a grass field about as long as a soccer field and box lacrosse is played indoors. It is the national sport of Canada but is also played in many other countries.

Martial Arts

Martial Arts is a term that is used for various forms of combat, self defense, and sport combat. This can include both unarmed and armed. Although many think of the Eastern disciplines when you hear the words Martial Arts, it really includes all forms of combat from many regions of the world. For example, Fencing and Boxing would be a martial arts from the West.

Although Martial Arts is listed under the Sports category, it is much more and many disciplines are used for recreation, health/fitness, military training, spirituality, and of course self defense to name a few.

Multi-Sports

This category is for sites about sports which contain two or more distinct and different activities and in which the results of those activities combine together to determine the winner.

An example of this would be the triathlon because the combined times of the swim, run, and cycling phases determine the winner. Gymnastics would not fit here even though there is an all-around winner because each of the individual events also have winners.

Netball

Popular sport among women, but men are catching on. Netball is closely related to the original version of basketball developed by James Naismith in 1891.

Netball game consists of four 15-minute quarters. Court is divided lengthwise into thirds with goalpost (with a net but no backboard) on each end. Shots must only be attempted within the circle specified. Dribbling is not allowed, only throwing and catching and shooting hoops without dunking.

During play, each of the 7 players do not move outside his/her designated area on the court. The ball must not be held for more than 3 seconds, players cannot take more than two steps with the ball. Only the goal attacker and goal shooter can shoot baskets (1 point each).

This category lists sites for English only international, national, and local general sports organizations. Includes non-profit, charitable, and governmental organizations developing and supporting programs in a variety of sports. Organizations for a specific sport are listed under the corresponding category for the sport.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport where the competitors use a very detailed map and a compass to find their way through pre-specified control points in the landscape.

Orienteering is special because it can be enjoyed by everyone, from a highly competitive endurance sport where the runners are among the strongest endurance athletes of any sport in the world, to a slow walk in the woods at your own pace.

Needless to say, it is a sport where brainwork is essential, it is therefore said that orienteering is like "playing chess while running."

This category emphasizes the sport of orienteering, not the act of navigating in the woods, so you will find related sites in the Recreation : Outdoors hierarchy.

Paddleball

Paddleball was created at the University of Michigan in 1930 by Earl Riskey, a Physical Education instructor in that university.

It is played in one of two versions: 1-wall paddleball and 4-wall (indoor) paddleball. The latter is similar to a racquetball court. Game is played with a rimless paddle and a ball slightly smaller than a tennis ball.

Paddleball may by played by two players (singles) or four players (doubles). The object is to win the rally by serving or returning the ball so the opponent is unable to return the ball to the front wall before it touches the floor twice. Points are scored only by the serving side when it serves an ace or wins a rally.

Match is won by the side that wins two of a possible 3 games by scoring 21 points first (lesser points for a win are also common). If the games are tied 1-1, the tie-breaker game is won by the side that scores 11 points first.

Paintball

Paintball is a team sport where individuals try to eliminate members of the opposing team from the game by marking them with balls of paint, which are fired from a carbon dioxide or nitrogen powered airgun.

Pesäpallo

Pesäpallo, also known as pesis, is the Finnish version of baseball with a very modified field and very modified rules. The sport is very popular in Finland and is starting to attract a worldwide following.

Petanque

Petanque, also called "boules" looks like the Italian bocce, but is played with smaller, metal balls. The aim is to roll or toss the metal boules as close as possible to a little wooden aim ball. Originated in the South of France, the game is now probably the most popular lawn game in Europe and spreading all over the world.

Racquetball

Racquetball is a racquet sport usually played indoors in an enclosed court. Other variations of racquetball can be played on one, two, or three walled courts outdoors.

Racquetball is an offshoot of squash, which is popular in the European countries.

The racquets are shorter than tennis racquets and the ball is made of rubber.

Racquetball is a fast and exciting game which has turned many players into hopeless, hardbodied addicts of the sport.

Because of it's starting and stopping charactersitics, racquetball is not considered to be an "aerobic" sport by definition, although it definately can contain an element of aerobic exercise.

Many pounds have been sweated away on the racquetball courts. It's a great addition to your diet plan.

One more thing.. if someone on the court asks you if you want a donut, just say NO! (A donut is racquetball jive for a really big ball-shaped bruise.) We racquetball players wear our donuts proudly because it means we played someone who hits really hard..

Soccer

In 1863 in England when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses the oldest football association in the world was founded, namely The Football Association, England. The Oxford University students of the 1880s used the word "soccer" an abbreviation of "asSOCiation" from Association Football.

An International Board was created in 1882 to look after the laws and rules of soccer. Today it consists of four representatives nominated by FIFA, and one from each of the four UK associations, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

FIFA, Federation Internationale de Football Association, was founded in Paris in May 1904. Today FIFA has 204 members in every part of the world. There are six confederations within FIFA organizing soccer in Africa(CAF), Asia(AFC), Europe(UEFA), North America(CONCACAF), Oceania(OFC) and South America(CONMEBOL).

Softball

In this category, we are treating Softball as the generic name for three distinct sports: Fastpitch, Modified Pitch, and Slowpitch. All three sports are international in nature and are played by men, women, boys and girls in every part of the United States.

No sites will be listed under the category of Softball. They must be put under one of the distinct sports or must be listed under the subcategories (like Software) that apply to all three sports.

The most recognizable distinction between the sports is in the pitching delivery. The major governing bodies (ASA, NSA, USSSA, PONY and others) provide on-line and published rule books which give descriptions of the different pitching styles as well as other variations in the way the games are played.

Tennis

The game of tennis most commonly played today has been adapted from a much earlier game called Court Tennis, Real Tennis, or Royal Tennis (depending on where you live).

Modern tennis is played on a special court divided by a net, with a single player at each end (singles), or a team of two players at each end (doubles). Players use racquets to hit a ball back and forth, either on the full or after a single bounce.
