Outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds broke into the majors with Baltimore in 1993. He has since played for Cincinnati and most recently Colorado, coming as part of the trade that sent Dante Bichette to the Reds.
In his first eight seasons in the majors, left-handed pitcher Mike Hampton compiled an 85-53 record and a 3.44 career ERA playing for the Mariners, Astros and Mets. After the 2000 season he signed with the Colorado Rockies as a free agent.
In his debut season,1998, Todd Helton set numerous Colorado Rockies team records for a rookie. He attracted national attention in 2000 when had a batting average over .400 as late as August, eventually finishing with a league-best .372.
Outfielder Rickey Henderson is baseball's all-time stolen base leader, finishing the 2000 season with 1,370. He made his debut with the Oakland A's in 1979 and has since played for the Yankees, Blue Jays, Padres, Angels, Mets and Mariners, as well as returning to the A's for several more stints. From 1980 to 1986, he lead the American League in steals each year, setting a record for most consecutive titles. In 1995 he passed Lou Brock's career record of 938 stolen bases to set a new major league record. In 2001 he will almost certainly pass Babe Ruth's record of 2062 walks to become the leader in that category as well.
Ed Herrmann is a San Diego native who was a pitcher at Crawford High School. In 1964 he was drafted to be a catcher with the Milwaukee Braves.He signed shortly after with the Chicago White Sox and remained with them until 1974 when he was traded to play with the New York Yankees. He ended his career in 1978 after playing with the Los Angeles Angels the Houston Astros and the Montreal Expos.
Herrmann's highlight year was 1970 when he hit 19 home runs for the White Sox for a .283 batting average and 52 RBIs. He was also elected to play in the 1974 All-Star Game. Herrmann participated in 1 no-hitter in 1967 for Joel Horlen and catching another in 1976 for Larry Dirker. His fans called him "SupHerrmann" and was called "Hoggy" and "Fort Herrmann" by his teammates.
