Fraternities and sororities (sometimes referred to as "women's fraternities") are a unique form of student organization at (primarily) North American colleges and universities. Most organizations have names which consist of two or three Greek letters which represent words or phrases outlining the organization's beliefs or history.While the implementation of fraternities and sororities varies widely from campus to campus and region to region, each group is founded on the principles of lifelong friendship and other ennobling ideals such as scholarship, chivalry, public service, and/or religious ideals.

Class societies are fraternal organizations that recruit only from the one class each year. Historically, these types of organizations thrived between 1850 and 1930, although many still exist. Most are either Senior Socieites or Sophomore Societies. Originally highly secretive organizations, on many campuses, these organizations have become primarily honor societies, although they still maintain many of the traditions of the original societies. Unlike other collegiate fraternal organizations, class societies do not use Greek letters for their names.
