Computer and console RPGs (roleplaying games) are like computer-mediated tabletop RPGs.RPGs are combat-oriented games in which you play a character (or group of characters) in a story. Generally, the goal is to go certain places and perform required actions to advance the story, while fighting off enemies who are out to stop you. Your character grows in power from success in fighting, accumulating weapons and armor with different capabilities, and items with special abilities like relieving combat damage.
Web games in which you control a single detailed character, typically adventuring in a graphical fantasy world and improving in abilities over many sessions of play. All these sites are about role playing games played on the Web, through a Web browser. Sites about role-playing games played on your computer without a Web browser belong in Games/Video_Games/RPGs. Sites about Tabletop Role-playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, belong in Games/Role-Playing Games.

"Roguelike games, and there are hundreds ... nay ... thousands of variants out there, all share a few common characteristics. First, they are free. Second, they are turn based single player games that involve a player character, usually represented by an '@' symbol, who travels through randomly generated dungeons killing LOTS of monsters, also represented by a variety of ASCII symbols. The character grows in power, accumulating magic items, better armor, and deadlier weapons as he or she descends. But for me, the defining characteristic of a Roguelike game, that characteristic that makes a Roguelike game such a nail biting experience is that once you die, you're dead. For good. Game over."
