Top: Computers: Internet: Protocols

Submitted sites should be related to the Internet protocols, not the software or servers that use them.

Software that uses the protocols should be submitted to the appropriate subcategory in Computers/Software/Internet (ex. Computers/Software/Internet/Clients/Chat/IRC).

These sites provide information on the various protocols which define how computers making up the Internet interact.

DHCP

Submit only sites and pages where DHCP is the main issue discussed. Sites about a specific DHCP software should be submitted in the "Implementations" subcategory.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Every computer on a TCP/IP network must be given a unique computer name and IP address. DHCP is an Internet standard protocol that specifies methods for dynamic configuration of computers on TCP/IP networks. DHCP is designed to simplify and reduce the configuration and administration of computers on the network.

DNS

Please do not submit sites that primarily host dynamic DNS -- those should go to Top: Computers: Software: Internet: Servers: Address Management: Dynamic DNS Services.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed Internet directory service. A network of DNS servers respond to requests to translate between domain names (such as dmoz.org) and IP, Internet Protocol, numeric addresses (such as 207.200.81.139) for URLs and email delivery. Most Internet services rely on DNS to work.

IP

This section accepts sites and pages that discuss IP (IPv4) specifically. Sites that discuss IPv6 should be submitted to

Computers: Internet: Protocols: IP: IPng

and sites that discuss TCP or TCP/IP should be submitted to

Computers: Internet: Protocols: Transmission Protocols: TCP

The Internet Protocol (IP) is the standard method for transporting data between computers on the Internet. IP encodes data in the form of packets, a linear sequence of bytes of a known length. Each packet contains a header section at the beginning that includes the addresses of the source and destination computer, as well as error detection data.

IRC

Internet Relay Chat started out as a protocol for people, hungry for news from the war, to communicate and learn what was going on. Now IRC has expanded into a world-wide communication and chat system.

LDAP

Sites related to the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).

Mail

This is a collection of links to pages which explain various protocols related to email handling. If you're looking for mail software, go look in Computers:Software. This is for people interested in understanding how the mail system itself works.

NNTP

For protocols related to Usenet News (NNTP, standards for Usenet messages, proposed Usenet standards). Note that NNTP is an acronym for "Network News Transfer Protocol".

NTP

Network Time Protocol (NTP), discussed in RFCs 1305 and 2030, provides a distributed mechanism for synchronizing the system clocks on computers across a network. This category contains sites with information on the protocol. Sites for NTP client software should be submitted to Computers/Software/Internet/Clients/Time while sites describing NTP server software or sites from companies which provide equipment to support the protocol should be submitted to Computers/Software/Internet/Servers/Time. Sites which discuss other aspects of time and sites which display the current time from the web should be placed in Reference/Time.

PPP

If you want to add an ISP that provides PPP services to the Directory, you should submit it under Computers: Internet: Internet Service Providers.

RTSP

Submitted sites should be related to RTSP. The main category is for general information, and the "Implementations" subcategory is for implementations of the standard.

Sites in this category provide information on the Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), a protocol for control of multimedia streams. Issued by the IETF as a Proposed Standard as RFC 2326.

RWhois

RWhois is a Directory Services protocol which extends and enhances the Whois concept in a hierarchical and scaleable fashion. It focuses on the distribution of "network objects"--the data representing Internet resources or people--and uses the inherently hierarchical nature of these network objects (domain names, Internet Protocol (IP) networks, email addresses) to more accurately discover the requested information.

SIP

Please only submit Voice over IP websites that specifically, or primarily, relate to the SIP protocol.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants.

These sessions include Internet telephone calls, instant messaging, multimedia conferences, and multimedia distribution.

SNMP

Please only submit sites that deal with SNMP, Thank You.

SNMP is a communication protocol that has gained widespread acceptance since 1993 as a method of managing TCP/IP works, including individual network devices, and devices in aggregate. SNMP was developed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), and is applicable to any TCP/IP network, as well as other types of networks.

SSH

The SSH (Secure Shell) specifies a way for a user to remotely control another computer through a secure communications channel. The remote computer must run an SSH server; the user uses an SSH client to connect to the server. From the perspective of the user, an SSH client behaves just like a telnet (or rlogin) client, except that the communication is encrypted, so a third party cannot spy on it.

In addition to a secure interactive session, an SSH server generally provides facilities for secure file copying and wrapping any normal TCP/IP connection in a layer of security. (This is known as tunneling.) SSH supports a variety of authentication methods so both computers are satisfied that they know the identity of the other.

SSH clients may implement some or all of the above functionality. Not all permit secure file copying, and some have really extensive authentication methods available.

There are two versions of the SSH protocol: SSH1 and SSH2. They are not particularly compatible, so it is important to choose an SSH client whose version matches that of the SSH server on the remote computer.
